How does Frontline Flea Control Work?

What Is Frontline?

Frontline and Frontline Plus are flea control products produced by Merial and can effectively help control fleas on your pets. When it comes to using Frontline, it is best you understand how it works to get satisfying results from this product.

How it works?

After application, Frontline will kill fleas in all life stages within 24 hours. Frontline continues working for up to a month after application. Frontline Plus works on ticks as well as fleas and can take up to 48 hours to kill ticks. For severe infestation, there is a Frontline spray you can apply to get immediate results.

The main ingredient in Frontline is Fipronil, which is a type of insecticide. Fipronil is spread across your pet’s skin by the bodily oils in the fur. Fipronil targets the nervous system of fleas and ticks which results in paralysis and death. After initial application, the hair follicles will continue to slowly release the chemical.

Frontline Plus contains the added ingredient (S)-methoprene, which is an insect growth regulator, meaning it prevents the fleas and ticks from maturing or reproducing.

How to apply?

To apply Frontline products, use your fingers to spread apart the fur between the shoulder blades and pour the liquid onto the skin. For a day afterward, there will be an oily appearance to the skin and you should avoid touching this area. Should you touch the application area, it is important you thoroughly wash your hands. After application, you want to wait about 3 days before grooming your dog or cat. When applying the spray, you want to wear latex gloves. Ruffle the pet’s fur and the spray one to two pumps per pound of body weight. You should spray the solution onto your hand and then wipe the solution on the pet.
